Synergy Physiotherapy and Sports – The MedX approach to Back and Neck Pain Management

What is MedX?

MedX is advanced computerised testing of spine strength and is a safe , supervised and result driven exercise programme. MedX is patented and offers the unique technology to test and quantify spine muscle strength which no other assessment or intervention does. MedX devices feature elaborate and patented restraint mechanisms to isolate, target and accurately measure the strength of the spine.

Testing procedures and rehabilitation protocols have been researched and developed over 20 years, primarily at the Centre for Health and Human Performance, Exercise Science and Colleges of Medicine, University of Florida, and in addition at the University of California School of Medicine, San Diego.

Integrated into every MedX product are decades of experience and millions of dollars of independent, university-based research. In terms of biomechanical design and mechanical functionality, MedX is the most technologically advanced spinal rehabilitation equipment available. MedX resistance exercises allow the user to choose the resistance in 2 pound increments which is a very safe way for resistance training.

What does research say about MedX?

Clinical studies have shown that MedX-based testing and exercise therapy relieves back and neck pain, restores function and reduces the need for spinal surgeries.

With more than 50 published articles in peer-reviewed journals, the proof lies in the research and the thousands of testimonials from people around the world.

No other equipment in the world can provide the measurable results in strength, flexibility and muscular endurance, rehabilitation, injury prevention and overall physical condition.

What is the exercise protocol like?

MedX protocol includes

  • A thorough clinical assessment by physiotherapists.
  • Warm up exercises which includes specific stretches for the spine & lower limbs and cardio vascular exercises
  • Static test to establish baseline strength of spine muscles
  • Dynamic exercises that involve progressive loading of the spinal muscles
  • Repeat static test to establish improvement in strength.

The entire exercise protocol is conducted under strict supervised environment.

Who performs the assessment on the MedX?

Assessment of baseline strength and dynamic exercises are performed by qualified and registered Physiotherapists who have years of experience treating musculoskeletal disorders.

What spine conditions can be treated with the MedX approach?

  • Slipped disc
  • Degenerative Discs of Spine
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Back and Neck muscle weakness due to bad posture
  • Weakness and Pain following Whiplash ( after car accidents)
  • Non Specific Back pain
  • Mechanical back pain
  • Nerve related issues in the spine
  • Cervical and Lumbar Spondylosis

Repetitive stress injuries (RSI) or cumulative trauma disorders are a group of injuries that commonly affect the muscles, nerves and joints of the upper limb. Upper limbs are meant for performing simple to complex tasks in our day to day activities. Some of us are required to perform the same tasks within a short span of time repeatedly due to work or recreational activities.

Finger Injury East Coast

When tasks are performed repeatedly, there is inadequate rest and recovery period and therefore muscles and or joints are predisposed to RSIs.

Some examples of RSI in our day to day activities are lifting/carrying heavy loads, using tools manually, performing keystrokes on the computer keyboard, working in assembly lines in industries.

What are some common RSI’s

  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Supraspinatus tendonitis
  • Bicipital tendonitis
  • Tennis/Golfer’s elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Wrist ligament injuries
  • Dequervain’s tendonitis
  • Trigger finger

At times more than one type of RSI can occur together.

How do we help?

Pain relief, activity modification and strengthening of muscles around the affected area are paramount towards preventing the musculoskeletal issue from recurring. Addressing the cause of the pain is important as this will ensure that the problem will not repeat itself.

Knee pain and knee injuries are very common across the spectrum of age groups. Some common causes of knee pain and injuries include

  • Age related disorders (degeneration (wear and tear) of articular cartilage.
  • Pain due to overuse
  • Sports related injuries ( trauma in contact sports such as rugby and soccer that could result in injuries to anterior cruciate ligament, meniscus and other knee structures)
  • Bio-mechanical presentations such as knock knees, bow legs and collapsed medial arch of foot)

Knee cap pain is another common cause of pain that affects the knee area.

How does Physiotherapy help?

Preliminary examination is important in identifying the cause of the knee pain and ascertaining the anatomical structure that is implicated. A routine examination would include checking the joint for movements, muscle strength and integrity of ligaments that support the knee. Weakness of the quadriceps, tightness in ilio-tibial band (ITB), damage of the anterior cruciate ligament, meniscus, ligamentum patellae and collateral ligaments can result in knee pain while performing specific activities.

Physiotherapy can help in controlling knee pain by

-identifying cause including bio-mechanical contributions

-applying appropriate pain relief modalities,

-implementing appropriate exercises to strengthen muscles around knee

-identifying triggers and

-modifying activities

Physiotherapy can also help assist in post – surgical rehabilitation of total knee replacement, ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair.
